How to recognize an Asian hornet?

The Asian hornet is very easy to recognize because it is the only wasp in Europe to have such a dark color. Vespa velutina is predominantly black, with a broad orange band on the abdomen and a yellow border on the first segment. Its head seen from the front is orange and its legs are yellow at the ends. It measures between 17 and 32 mm.

Where is he from ?

As its name suggests, it originated in Asia. This species is found in northern India, China or in the mountains of Indonesia. It seems that he arrived in France hidden in a load of Chinese pottery delivered in 2004 to Tonneins (Lot-et-Garonne). In a few years, it proliferated everywhere in France and also spread to Spain and Portugal
