Lances with variable flow and jet

This generation of lances succeeds the so-called “traditional” lances, or simple cone lances.

DSC semantics gives it the name “lance with adjustable flow and jet” replacing the inappropriate term “variable flow lance” which does not take into account the possibility of adjusting the jet.

On these lances, of recent design, the rotating ring allows selection of the desired flow rate. The tap is only used to close and open the jet. By manipulating the lance head, several types of jet are possible:

  • Straight jet, high power, to water the flame base and/or reduce the flames (roof fires, etc.). There is no real stick throw on this type of lance due to the very design of the lance.
  • Broadcast attack jet, to form a cloud of droplets, allowing the cooling of the (hot) combustion gases located in the upper part of a room (closed or semi-open). The aim of this jet is to obtain strong cooling power using a minimum of water, to cause as little damage as possible (apartment fires, etc.). This jet is used during penciling to neutralize energies because it offers sufficient range and dispersion of calorie-absorbing droplets.
  • Protective diffused jet, forming a screen of water sprayed as wide as possible in front of the wearer, to protect themselves as much as possible from the heat if the need arises. It will be used during open lance progression (gas bottle fire or LPG light vehicle fire).

The concept of a broadcast jet appeared in 1950 at the suggestion of Chief Lloyd Layman of the Parkersburg WV Fire Department (United States).

The most recent lances have an ergonomic pistol-style handle. These handles facilitate the grip of the lance, facilitating the progression of the wearer.

Depending on the brand, the characteristics may vary, such as the flow rate adjustment which can be adjusted by means of a ring instead of the handle.

The supply pressure values supplied by the manufacturers do not include the pressure drops of the pipes connecting them to the pressurized water source (usually the pump unit, exceptionally a motor pump). The pressure at the outlet of the pump is therefore often greater than the maximum.

The different possible theoretical flow rates are determined by the diameter of the lance (a change in pressure at the lance leads to a change in flow):

  • Diameter 20 mm → From 20 to 150 Liters / Min.
  • Diameter 40 mm → From 100 to 475 Liters / Min.
  • Diameter 65 mm → From 285 to 950 Liters / Min.
