wildfire drip torch

What is a drip torch?

A flashlight is a device used to start fires for the purpose of controlled burns or to establish firewalls while fighting fires. These devices are used by professional firefighters and by people such as loggers who have been trained in the correct use of a drip torch. A drip flashlight can be very dangerous in the hands of a user who has not received the proper training, and the sale of these devices is limited in certain areas for this reason.

The drip torch consists of a fuel tank attached to a nozzle. Fuel flows from the nozzle and passes an igniter, allowing flaming drops of fuel to strike the ground. These droplets start a fire in the area where they are deposited. Drip torches are commonly used to create a line of sight and are much safer than alternatives such as dribbling fuel onto the ground and then igniting it.

As one can imagine, the use of an anti-drip torch requires certain safety precautions. The torch itself has a check valve to control the flow of fuel into the igniter, as well as valves and safety devices that prevent fire from rising up the nozzle and igniting the tank. Very stable fuels, such as kerosene, are often used to reduce the risk of unwanted ignition, and the drip lamp is insulated to prevent the contents from overheating.

When using a dropper torch, it is necessary to wear full protective gear, including fire resistant clothing, face protection, heavy duty safety gloves, and sturdy boots. The use of torches is also coordinated to ensure that everyone's location on the scene is known and to confirm that everyone is coordinating their activities. Situations such as trapping a person in a fire are highly undesirable and are avoided thanks to elaborate security protocols.

Training in the use of a torch is usually given in schools where people learn to fight forest fires. Members of urban firefighting organizations can also familiarize themselves with these devices, as can rural firefighters. Forestry schools also teach students how to use drip torches as part of forest management, as they can be used to light piles of brush and to perform controlled burns for a variety of reasons. These devices are generally used in groups, with group members looking after the safety of others and intervening in the event of a problem.
